Dextran Sulfate Sodium Induced Colitis - Mouse

The dextran sulfate induced colitis model has been shown to be a good indicator of clinical effectiveness. Drugs may be administered by any route and is usually done daily for 5 to 7 days. Colitis is produced by replacing the normal supply of drinking water with a 5% dextran sulfate sodium solution as their sole source of water. Colitis as indicated by weight loss and bloody diarrhea occurs in 4 to 5 days. Test agents are usually tested in a protocol in which they can prevent colitis, although, a treatment protocol is also available. Evaluation of effectiveness is based on a decrease in the disease activity index and prevention of colonic shortening. Can be used in mice or rats.
